(RepublicanReport.org) – On May 1, the Libertarian Party announced it had invited former President Donald Trump to speak at the group’s annual conference on Memorial Day weekend. Independent presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. will also attend the event in Washington, DC, and he recently offered a proposal to his presumed opponent.
On May 7, RFK Jr. posted a note to Trump on social media, inviting the presumptive GOP nominee to a debate at the Libertarian convention. He reasoned that the event was “perfect neutral territory” for them both to debate, allowing Trump to “defend [his] record” to his “wavering supporters.”
Kennedy said the former president previously stated he would debate if RFK’s poll numbers were “decent.” The Independent candidate insisted that they are, citing multiple polling sources showing him pulling above 15%.
Kennedy suggested they meet at the convention and show voters that “at least two of the major candidates aren’t afraid to debate. That dig seemed to be toward President Joe Biden who hasn’t officially agreed to get on stage with Trump. Biden recently stated he would be glad to debate the former president, but no official date has been set.
RFK Jr. claimed that he was drawing a lot of support away from Trump because they blamed him for substantially increasing the deficit, his actions during the pandemic, and populating his “administration with swamp creatures.” According to Kennedy, the Libertarian Convention organizers are open to the idea.
Recently numbers from 144 polls shared by The Hill showed Kennedy with 8.5% of the vote, Trump with 41.2%, and Biden with 40.1%. The Trump campaign has not responded to Kennedy’s invitation, making it unclear if he plans to take his opponent up on the offer.
The presumptive GOP nominee has been attacking Kennedy on his social media platform, calling him a “Democrat Plant” put in place to help Biden win in November. Trump even told reporters that Kennedy’s numbers weren’t good enough to warrant a debate.
