(RepublicanReport.org) – After much speculation about who former President Donald Trump might choose as his running mate heading into November, he finally made the announcement. On the first day of the Republican National Convention, it was announced that Trump had chosen Ohio Senator JD Vance (R) to join his ticket.
After the announcement, the lawmaker and now GOP vice presidential nominee said a few words to the crowd, detailing his upbringing, free speech, and coming together as a nation. Vance said he was grateful for the nomination and formally accepted his place by Trump’s side. The Ohio senator talked about his running mate, stating that although people call him a “tyrant” and “must be stopped,” the first thing he did after the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania was to call for “unity” and “calm.” He said Trump has been fighting for Americans for the past eight years “because he loves this country.”
Vance said he wanted to expand on Trump’s call for unity by saying Republicans are “united to win” because they also “love this country.” The lawmaker said that those in his party might disagree at times, but that only makes them “stronger.” The GOP VP nominee said a lesson he learned in the Senate was that sometimes he was able to persuade his colleagues to see his point of view on matters, and sometimes they were able to do the same. He pondered whether that’s not the very party that should be running the country — those who can “debate ideas and come to the best solution.”
The Ohio senator also touched on his childhood and how he was “lucky” because some of the people he grew up with succumbed to addiction. He called his grandmother, who raised him, a “guardian angel” and “tough as nails.” Vance gave a shout-out to his mom, who was at the convention, congratulating her on being 10 years sober.
NPR likened his speech to a “first date” with America — a chance to get to know him on a personal level.
