Biden: ‘Receptive’ to Ending Presidential Campaign

(RepublicanReport.org) – Ever since the June presidential debate, there have been increased rumblings about President Joe Biden stepping out of the race. The president himself has addressed these calls and rumors multiple times, insisting that he plans to stay in and officially become the Democratic presidential nominee in short order. However, that stance might not be as strong as people think.

What Did He Say?

Recently, an unnamed senior Democratic adviser told CNN that Biden is “receptive” to the idea of stepping aside, saying he was in a “contemplative stage” out of the public eye. The anonymous source said he was “thinking things through” and pondering how to move forward with his campaign while isolated in Delaware. However, the person also cautioned against speculating about the president’s next move, insisting that nobody knows what Biden will actually do.

Several Democrats have called for him to step out of the race, saying the US leader simply doesn’t have the numbers to win in November. Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) was one of those people. He called for Biden to “pass the torch,” but he admitted it was the president’s decision alone. Schiff’s call echoed that of about 20 other Democrats who want the president to drop out of the race.

Despite all the speculation. President Biden recently said during an interview that if he had “some medical condition” and his doctors confirmed it, he would consider stepping aside. In another interview, he said he would only drop out if the “Lord almighty” said to do so.

Who Would Replace Him?

If the president were to drop out of the race, many are saying the logical person to replace him on the ticket would be Vice President Kamala Harris. After all, she’s already on the ticket and can use the campaign funding collected so far for her efforts to win in November. However, according to reports, the Democratic Party has rules that govern what would happen if Biden dropped out. If it happened before the nomination, the delegates would cast their ballots to choose another candidate. The process after the nomination would involve the Democratic National Committee and Democratic leaders making the decision.

Several polls have run the numbers for a Harris campaign against the former president. A YouGov poll from mid-July showed Harris would lose by a larger margin than Biden in November. However, another poll by Reuters/Ipsos showed Biden and Harris tied with the GOP presidential candidate. A FiveThirtyEight analysis showed Harris’ odds of victory were better than Biden’s. Ultimately, it’s unclear how Democratic voters would react to Harris on the ticket in November.
