Newsom Endorses Kamala Harris, Governor Assumed To Be Replacement?

(RepublicanReport.org) – On July 21, President Joe Biden announced in a letter posted to social media that he was dropping out of the presidential race taking place in November. The announcement came as a shock to the country, as the president was adamant in public that he planned to remain the Democratic candidate. In Biden’s stead, a new presumptive candidate emerged — Vice President Kamala Harris. She quickly received several endorsements.

That same evening, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) posted about Harris on social media, backing her for the ticket. The governor, who many had been speculating could replace Biden in the race, called Harris “tough,” “fearless,” and “tenacious.” Newsom said there was nobody better, in his view, that could beat former President Donald Trump and “guide our country in a healthier direction.” Before Biden stepped out of the race, Newsom reportedly confirmed he would not run against Harris if she rose to the top of the ticket.

After the debate between Biden and former President Donald Trump, the media approached Newsom about replacing the president for a 2024 presidential run — a notion he called “farcical.” The governor still backed the president for the nomination, giving Biden his full endorsement. While Newsom’s name was among a few Democrats rumored to emerge as a replacement for Biden since his recent announcement, the party is rallying around Harris. In fact, she has now reportedly secured enough delegates to receive the nomination.

President Biden still has not directly addressed the nation regarding his decision, and it’s unclear exactly why he chose to step aside. In his letter, the US leader said it was in the “best interest of [his] party and the country for [him] to stand down.”

The choice will not be official until the Democratic National Convention, which starts on August 19. However, the nomination might come sooner to comply with certain state laws.
