Turner didn’t specify the nature of the threat. However, ABC News published a report later that day detailing information the news agencies obtained from two sources familiar with current deliberations at the nation’s capital. They said the Russians wanted to launch nuclear weapons into space.
Several lawmakers quickly spoke out about Turner’s claim. Many of them said the Russians didn’t plan on using the weapons to attack ground targets. Instead, they wanted to use them against satellites.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) weighed in on the situation that afternoon. He told reporters lawmakers were “working together” to address the potential threat. He concluded his remarks by providing his assurance that “steady hands are on the wheel.”
Turner’s Public Request Draws Criticism
In response to Chairman Turner’s public call for action, Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) has requested a formal inquiry into the ramifications of Turner’s announcement.
