Tucker Carlson Could Face Sanctions Over Putin Interview

(RepublicanReport.org) – Former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson recently confirmed that he interviewed Russian President Vladimir Putin, fueling the ire of European Union leaders. They’re calling the media personality a “mouthpiece” for the Kremlin’s commander-in-chief, and they want to impose a travel ban on him for assisting the Russian war criminal.

From Newsman to Propagandist

The interview doesn’t yet have a release date, but Newsweek reports that Carlson’s critics expect him to spin the content from an apologist’s point of view. The pundit has reportedly been sympathetic to Putin’s actions, even in the face of accusations that the Russian leader is responsible for “the most heinous regime” in Europe.

Carlson offered a video statement in defense of his decision to interview the Russian president, insisting that the American population doesn’t know why Putin opted to invade Ukraine and deserves to know as much as possible. A member of the European Parliament and former foreign minister for Estonia, Urmas Paet, reminded readers that Putin was wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes and genocide. He claimed Carlson was providing a platform for the Russian leader to spread his pro-war propaganda.

Joe Scarborough, an MSNBC host, blasted Carlson for his reasoning — particularly the conservative personality’s allegation that no one from the West was willing to accurately report on the war. Other journalists have tried to get both sides by traveling to Russia and seeking the truth firsthand, notes Scarborough via The Hill. “They’re in Gulags,” he adds, referring to the Soviet forced labor camps that took place up until the 1950s.

Support From MAGA Camp

Sympathy for Putin and the Russian regime has grown among MAGA followers, according to California Rep. Eric Swalwell (D), who claims Trump has direct and indirect ties to Russian interests. The representative alleges that the former president leaked classified information to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in 2017. He also claims that over a dozen of Trump’s associates have Russian connections, both business and personal, with some allegedly having close ties with Putin himself.

The Washington Post reports Putin’s stance on transgender individuals gained him support among Conservatives who hold similar views. The Russian leader has repeatedly criticized the West for promoting transgender rights, and MAGA supporters feel that they are aligned with him by a common value. The Post accuses the far-right camp of falling victim to exploitation through propaganda and helping the Kremlin further divide the United States.
