(RepublicanReport.org) – Former President Donald Trump appeared in a New York City courtroom on April 15 as the jury selection began for his latest trial. Prosecutors allege Trump paid an adult film star to stay quiet about an extramarital affair they had ahead of his 2016 campaign for the White House. The “hush money” trial has attracted plenty of media attention so far — but his lack of family support has raised an even bigger concern.
Social media didn’t miss a beat when no one from Trump’s immediate family showed up for his first day of court. Jon Cooper, who worked as a fundraiser for former President Barack Obama and National Finance Chair under President Biden, said on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, that the absence of Trump’s wife and all of his adult children “speaks volumes.” Users from both sides of the political aisle chimed in, many taking the opportunity to air personal observations or share divisive memes.
The reasons behind Trump’s lack of family in court are likely to vary, but some members might be staying out of the courtroom for now because they plan on testifying during the trial. ABC News reports that the potential witness list includes Melania Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner. Other possible witnesses may include members of the MAGA leader’s former administration and former Trump Organization employees. There’s no word, at least in most cases, as to whether these potential witnesses plan on testifying for the prosecution or the defense.
Trump stands accused of paying off adult film actress Stormy Daniels through his lawyer at the time, Michael Cohen, and then falsifying business records to hide the transaction. The former president acknowledges that he gave Cohen a $130,000 reimbursement but rejects Daniels’ claims that he did so to pay her off. According to the 16-page indictment, the MAGA leader faces 34 felony counts for the alleged acts.
Trump maintains that he is an innocent victim of a political witch hunt.
