(RepublicanReport.org) – The Journal of the American Medical Association’s Network Open project recently published the results of a study detailing the national estimates of gender-affirming surgical procedures performed in same-day surgery centers in the US from 2016 to 2020. The journal explained that those were the latest figures available.
The study found that the number of individuals receiving those surgeries almost tripled over that span, peaking in 2019 with more than 13,000 procedures. There was a slight dip in the level of gender-affirming procedures like genital reconstruction and breast removals in 2020 due to mandatory quarantines and lockdowns. Stunningly, nearly 3,700 minors ranging from 12 to 18-year-olds received those radical operations.
A group of Ohio Republicans recently banned those trans procedures on minors. They also force through a companion measure restricting boys from competing against women in sports activities and competitions.
GOP Lawmakers in Ohio United To Defeat Obstructionist Governer Pandering to Woke Concerns
On January 24, the Ohio Senate successfully overrode Republican Governor Mike DeWine’s veto of the Enact Ohio Saving Adolescents from Experimentation (SAFE) Act and the Save Women’s Sports Act (both were included in HB 68). A total of 24 Republicans voted in the affirmative. One GOP lawmaker defected and joined seven Democrats voting nay. Likewise, the House voted to pass the measure 65 to 28 along party lines with no defectors on January 10.
The House previously passed the bill in June 2023, and in mid-December, the Senate passed HB 68. The lower chamber approved the Senate’s amendments to the bill later that day, and lawmakers sent the measure to DeWine for his signature. Instead, he vetoed the legislation on December 29.
Ohio’s New Law Protects Children and Athletes
As the name implies, the SAFE Act protects minors from radical experimental gender-affirming treatments and procedures. The measure updated current state law to prohibit physicians from “knowingly” performing “gender reassignment surgery” on minors or prescribing a “puberty-blocking drug” or a “cross-sex hormone” to underaged patients to facilitate a so-called “gender transition.” The legislative act also restricts medical doctors from engaging in any conduct that “aids or abets” those practices in any way.
Lawmakers also provided an exception to the first portion of those restrictions. Physicians can continue to prescribe and treat patients with cross-sex hormones and puberty-blocking drugs if the minor patient has been a continuous resident of Ohio and the following provisions apply:
- The doctor initiated the patient’s course of treatment before the effective date of those restrictions, and
- The physician “determined and documented” that stopping the treatment “would cause harm” to the underage patient.
Additionally, the law bars mental health professionals from treating or diagnosing minors suffering from a “gender-related condition” without obtaining the consent of at least one parent, guardian, or legal custodian.
The Save Women’s Sports Act is a simpler piece of legislation. It bars boys from competing in women’s athletics programs, events, and competitions in K to 12 and collegiate-level educational facilities.
