Melania Trump Announces Passing of Her Mother

(RepublicanReport.org) – Former First Lady Melania Trump recently announced the sad news of her mother’s passing in a post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. Amalija Knavs died at the age of 78. The cause of death hasn’t been officially released, but Mrs. Trump had reportedly sat by her ailing mother’s bedside at a hospital on New Year’s Eve in lieu of attending her husband’s big celebratory bash.

Melania Trump shared the sad news on January 9 without disclosing any specifics about the cause behind her mother’s passing. She described Knavs as “a strong woman” whom she praised for her “grace, warmth, and dignity.” The former first lady noted her late mother’s devotion to her family, adding that loved ones would miss her, and she promised to hold the woman’s legacy close to her heart. Mrs. Trump and her mom were reportedly close, and Knavs was also an active part in the upbringing of her grandson, Barron.

Former President Donald Trump also shared the news on Truth Social. He alluded to Knavs having moved on to heaven, adding that she had been “an incredible woman” and would be terribly missed.

The deceased had spent the last several years living with her husband at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. The couple became US citizens in 2018, using the country’s family-based immigration pathway. The regulation allows close relatives of naturalized individuals — such as Melania Trump, who obtained her green card in 2001 and became naturalized in 2006 — to seek legal citizenship through them. Trump, who called the practice “chain migration” due to its potential for abuse, had previously spoken out against its use in the US system.

Marca states that Knavs was born in Austria in 1945, but spent much of her life in communist Slovenia. She married her husband, Viktor, in 1966 and had her first daughter, Ines, in 1968. She gave birth to Melania in 1970.
