Haley Says She Would Pardon Trump If She’s Elected

(RepublicanReport.org) – GOP presidential primary candidate Nikki Haley believes she, not former President Donald Trump, is the right person to lead the United States next term. Still, she’s against the multiple legal proceedings her opponent currently faces, and says she would pardon him for any crimes he was found guilty of committing if elected to office.

NBC News shared a clip from “NBC News NOW,” broadcasted on December 28, on YouTube, where Haley responds to a 9-year-old boy’s apparent question on the controversial matter. In the video, the Republican longshot states with certainty that she would pardon Trump for “the best interest of the country.” Haley adds that she feels no good would come from putting someone his age behind bars, and she thinks the country needs the closure of his pardoning in order to move on.

Haley is clear in that she believes Trump’s time in the White House has come and gone. She previously raised eyebrows with previous assertions that all politicians older than 75 years old should pass mandatory mental competency tests before being allowed to serve. Still, she has been supportive of the former president in his multiple legal battles, one of which seeks to convict him of attempting to overturn Georgia’s 2020 presidential election results in an effort to retain the presidency.

Haley made her recent statement before Maine joined Colorado in its decision to remove Trump’s name from the state’s 2024 primary ballot. Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows declared the former president had “engaged in insurrection” on January 6, 2021, making him ineligible to run for office under the 14th Amendment. Experts expect the issue to go to the US Supreme Court.

FiveThirtyEight’s latest tallies as of January 1 show Haley’s jumped in popularity over recent weeks, currently trailing second-place contender Ron DeSantis by less than one percentage point after struggling throughout much of the rest of her campaign. Trump remains the GOP frontrunner.
