Congress Passes Ukraine, Israel Foreign Aid Bill

(RepublicanReport.org) – Ukraine has been struggling to hold back the Russians and defend their country as US aid to help them fight. Republicans and Democrats in Congress have been battling for quite some time about whether to continue supplying the sovereign nation. Lawmakers largely agreed that aid was needed, pulling together to pass the measure despite opposition from the far Right.

On April 20, the House of Representatives passed a $95 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and other allies by an overwhelming majority. However, there was a large chunk of GOP lawmakers who voted no on several of the measures, including the whole package. The most unified section was for Taiwan’s aid.

The legislation was then sent to the Senate. Once there, the chamber’s Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) took the floor to discuss its importance. The lawmaker said the Senate was sending a “unified message to the entire world” — the US “will always defend democracy.”

The Senate viewed the package and passed it three days later, sending the legislation to the president’s desk to be signed into law. President Joe Biden indicated he intends to sign the package without delay, calling the legislation “urgently needed.”

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) firmly backed the measure, stating its passage marked a “very important day for freedom-loving countries.” The package included $60 billion for Ukraine, $17 billion for Israel, $9 billion for Gaza and elsewhere in need of humanitarian aid, and $8 billion for other allies.

Some House members were less enthusiastic about the measures, but House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) — who initially resisted sending aid overseas — ultimately worked with Democrats to pass the bills. The speaker stated that he would “rather send bullets to Ukraine than American boys.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude that America came together in his country’s hour of need. He thanked Johnson for advancing the bill, adding that “peace and security can only be attained through strength.” Zelenskyy also said “thank you” to America.
