(RepublicanReport.org) – Shots rang out in Kansas City, Missouri, while National Football League (NFL) fans were celebrating the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory. The gunfire left one person dead and several others injured. Police have three people in custody, and while they haven’t yet released the suspects’ identities, they’ve confirmed that two of the individuals are juveniles.
The Kansas City Chiefs won the big February 11 game over the San Francisco 49ers with a final score of 25 to 22, sparking the February 14 parade. This was the Chiefs’ fourth NFL championship, and massive crowds gathered to celebrate the win.
Gunfire threw the event into chaos, driving people to run for cover amid the crowded streets. Fans were participating in a victory rally that had begun after a parade when someone fired at least 15 to 20 rounds in quick succession. One attendee said they initially thought they were hearing fireworks. One woman — a mother of two and local radio personality — died as a result of the gunfire, and 22 other people suffered injuries, 15 of which were life-threatening. The youngest victim was 8 years old, according to Newsmax, although Reuters states that several children as young as six years old were wounded in the mayhem.
Investigators believe a personal dispute, not a terrorist or targeted attack, was behind the shooting. In addition to the three people they have detained, police took several firearms into custody.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas insists he did everything possible to keep his people safe during the event. He had 800 members of law enforcement — including added help from Federal Bureau of Investigations agents and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives — at both the parade and the rally that came afterward. The Democrat blames the shooting on increases in gun violence, claiming nowhere in the US is safe anymore.
Investigators are asking any witnesses, especially those with cell phone footage of the shooting, to help confirm the shooters and the details that led up to the tragedy.
