
The Navy’s newest aircraft carrier just proved it can do its job at sea, clearing a major hurdle on the way to joining the fleet.

Ford-Class Carrier Clears Key Test
The future USS John F. Kennedy left Newport News Shipbuilding on Aug. 12 and spent four days at sea off the Atlantic Coast, running through a packed test schedule. The ship returned to port Aug. 15 after finishing what the Navy and its builder call acceptance trials, according to a shipbuilder statement. It is the second Gerald R. Ford-class carrier, following the lead ship USS Gerald R. Ford into the water.
Huntington Ingalls Industries, the parent company of Newport News Shipbuilding, confirmed the successful outcome in its own announcement, calling it a milestone for the $13 billion-class program. The trial marks the second time this year the carrier has gone to sea for testing, following an earlier round in February.
What the Trials Checked
Acceptance trials are crew-led tests designed to show Navy inspectors that the ship was built to contract specifications and that its crew can run it at sea. Inspectors from the Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey pushed the carrier’s propulsion, navigation, and combat systems during the underway period, a step that comes near the end of a ship’s construction. The trials mark one of the final checks before the Navy formally takes ownership.
Testing also covered the carrier’s weapons elevators, its Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System, the Advanced Arresting Gear used to recover aircraft, and its new radar system, according to defense trade coverage of the trials. Raytheon’s SPY-6(V)3 radar, built for the ship, also went through its own acceptance testing during the same period, adding another checked box to the carrier’s long list of new technology.
Road to the Fleet
The John F. Kennedy first went to sea in early February for builder’s sea trials, an earlier test phase run by the shipyard itself before the Navy’s own inspectors got involved. Completing acceptance trials moves the ship past one of the last major gates standing between construction and delivery to the fleet. Officials say the carrier remains on schedule for delivery ahead of a planned commissioning in March 2027.
