(RepublicanReport.org) – Even though former President Donald Trump runs on the Republican ticket, that doesn’t stop him from criticizing others on his side of the aisle. Typically, he refers to GOP members who disagree with him as RINOs (Republicans in name only), but this time, he referenced some policies within his own party, calling them “ridiculous.”
What Did Trump Say?
On July 10, the former president sat for an interview on Fox News with Brian Kilmeade, who asked him about the recently released Republican platform. The document showed a softer stance on abortion and same-sex marriage. Instead of calling for a nationwide abortion ban, the new platform simply addressed late-term abortions. As for marriage, the GOP reworked platform didn’t mention Obergefell v. Hodges at all, nor did it say marriage should only be between one man and one woman.
Trump said the platform was not meant to target moderates but was just “common sense.” He said the 2016 GOP platform had, “in some cases, gay bans,” and he disagreed with that, adding some “other things” in there were “ridiculous.” However, he didn’t specify what those were. The presumptive GOP presidential nominee then went on to taut his accomplishment of overturning Roe v. Wade, stating the issue of abortion was now “simplified” and the action was an “incredible thing.” However, the majority of Americans (65%) disagree with that decision.
Trump released his own platform, Agenda 47, which is a series of videos about his stance on various issues. Abortion and IVF are reportedly not addressed.
This wasn’t the first time Trump used the word “ridiculous” to reference ideologies widely accepted by members of the Republican party.
Ridiculous and Reactions
When word started to spread about the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 agenda, Trump posted about the subject on his social media platform. He claimed to “know nothing about” the initiative or “who [was] behind it.” After claiming he had no knowledge of the project, Trump said he didn’t agree with some of it, adding “things they’re saying [were] absolutely ridiculous and abysmal.” Many of Trump’s former aides and associates are spearheading the project.
At least one Republican, former Vice President Mike Pence, was unhappy about Trump’s seemingly softened stance on the issues. He said the new RNC platform’s absence of a firm pro-life stance is a “profound disappointment” to GOP members who have “always looked to the Republican Party to stand for life.” There were virtually no reactions to Trump’s use of the word “ridiculous” when describing some previous GOP platform issues.
