(RepublicanReport.com) – On January 6, 2021, a protest on Capitol Hill turned into violent unrest. This led to five deaths, as well as an attempt by Democrats to remove former President Trump from office and ensure he could never run again.
Now that Trump’s impeachment trial has ended in his acquittal, the Democrats are moving forward with a new investigation into the Capitol incident. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has proposed a large-scale investigation of what happened, dubbing it a “9/11-type Commission.” However, this idea is not without its critics.
On Wednesday, February 17, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) slammed Pelosi’s suggestion during an appearance on Fox News. Hawley claimed the House Speaker was using what happened at the Capitol as “an excuse to seize power.”
He also took issue with the decision to hire retired US Army Lieutenant General Russel Honoré to consult on Capitol Hill security. Honoré, Hawley claimed, is an “extreme left-wing Democrat,” a characteristic that makes him unsuitable for what should be an impartial role.
While Pelosi said in a statement that this investigation is designed to “get to the truth” about what happened at the Capitol. Hawley, on the other hand, fears it may be a threat to people’s First and Second Amendment rights.
