Senator Launches Plan to Empower Local Law Enforcement on Immigration

( – President Joe Biden has weakened America’s ability to control its borders in a number of ways since taking office. For example, he’s reduced the power of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), limiting its ability to detain and deport illegal immigrants.

On Tuesday, May 11, Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) spoke to Fox News about a new bill he’s introducing with two-party colleagues. It’s titled The Empowering Law Enforcement, and it would allow state and local police to take charge of immigration cases. The Act would provide local law enforcement the ability to “investigate, identify, apprehend, arrest, detain, or transfer an alien into Federal custody.” This new bill could fill the gap left by ICE’s diminished authority.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), who introduced the Act alongside Tuberville and Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD), released a statement on Wednesday in which he denounced the “disastrous response to the border crisis.” Tillis traveled to the border and liaised with law enforcement there before introducing this bill.

Could this be a first step toward managing what’s quickly becoming a border crisis of historic proportions?
