NYPD Shoot And Kill 13-Year-Old Boy Carrying Replica Handgun

(RepublicanReport.org) – The Gun Violence Archive tracks shootings in America. So far, in 2024, there have been 8,485 murders, 260 mass shootings, and 745 officer-involved incidents. Given those statistics, gun violence is a very real problem in the United States, and most citizens are acutely aware of this fact. Recently, that heightened awareness led to tragedy.

On June 26, a 13-year-old boy in Utica, New York — Nyah Mway — was shot by police after fleeing from officers and allegedly pointing a Glock 17 Gen 5 replica at them when the cops were in pursuit. After tackling the boy to the ground, one of the officers shot Mway in the chest, killing him.

Police spokesperson Lt. Michael Curley said the replica appeared realistic, complete with “GLOCK markings, signatures, detachable magazine, and serial numbers.” However, none of those details were visible during the chase. Officer Patrick Husnay was the policeman who fired the fatal shot. He and two other officers were placed on administrative leave — with pay — pending investigation.

The officers reportedly stopped two young people they allegedly believed could have been involved in an armed robbery. When the policemen announced they were going to pat the youths down for possible weapons, Mway took off. That’s when the officers gave chase and stated their belief that the 13-year-old pointed a weapon at them. Video of the ordeal also shows the officer who caught and tackled the teen and punched him in the face until his fellow cops arrived. It’s unclear why Husnay shot the boy after he was already on the ground.

After the shooting, Husnay publicly claimed he shot a single bullet “straight towards the ground.” The police department is handling the investigation to determine if the officers followed proper protocol. The New York attorney general will reportedly also open an investigation to determine if Husnay was justified in his fatal action.

The teen was an 8th grader at Donovan Middle School in Utica who was described as an “outgoing kid who loved to be outside.”
