Haley Releases Her 97 Delegates, Urges Them to Vote for Trump

(RepublicanReport.org) – Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley (R) was running for president against former President Donald Trump in the GOP primary until just after Super Tuesday. During her time in the race, she earned 97 delegates across 12 states, the most coming from Washington, DC, Colorado, Minnesota, and North Carolina.

With less than a week to go before the Republican National Convention (RNC), Haley reportedly released the delegates she earned, encouraging those voters to back Trump. The former presidential candidate was “not invited” to the convention, but her spokesperson, Chaney Denton, said Haley was “fine with that.” She added that “Trump deserves the convention he wants,” wishing him “the best.”

Haley believes now is the time for the GOP to unify, and this action was her way of ceremoniously contributing to that effort. Given her previous pivot about voting for Trump in November, the move isn’t surprising.

However, just because the former SC governor said she was letting the delegates go, they are reportedly under no obligation to vote for Trump at the convention. The 97 delegates are free to continue backing Haley or to choose another Republican candidate. Currently, the former president has 2,265 delegates — not counting Haley’s addition — if they choose to support Trump. The number needed for the nomination is 1,215, which Trump has surpassed.

The RNC is set to take place from July 15 through July 18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where the GOP is expected to choose Trump as the official Republican presidential nominee. The former president is also likely to announce his running mate, a name he has been keeping close to the vest.

Still, the presumptive nominee recently said he hasn’t “made a final decision” as to who will be his VP pick. Speculation has been swirling about the possibilities, including Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Senator JD Vance (R-OH), and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum (R).
