GOP Committee To Approve Trump Platform’s Softened Stances On Life, Marriage

(RepublicanReport.org) – In 2016, the Republican National Committee (RNC) released its official platform for the party, detailing its stance on issues facing the country and its vision for the future. That agenda carried through the 2020 presidential election unchanged. Recently, the RNC released its 2024 platform, which some say is a watered-down version of its former self and missing a few key elements.

On July 9, the RNC reportedly held a closed-door meeting in Wisconsin, tentatively adopting a new platform for the GOP and supported by former President Donald Trump. The co-chair of the RNC, Lara Trump, confirmed that the agenda has “Trump written all over it,” confirming it was “his platform.” The new Republican agenda apparently passed with an 84 to 14 vote. While committee member Kevin Marino Cabrera said the party was “unified behind [the] platform,” others felt steamrolled by the change and how it was handled.

In the 2016 Republican platform, the party clearly stated that “traditional marriage and family [was] based on marriage between one man and one woman” and “condemned” the Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges. That case allowed for same-sex marriage in the US. It also made clear that the GOP was against using any public funding to “perform or promote abortion” and called for a federal abortion ban. The 2024 Republican agenda only stated that the GOP opposes late-term abortions but didn’t call for a federal ban. It did, however, state that the committee believes “no person can be denied Life or Liberty without Due Process.” The report doesn’t make it clear if fetuses are included, but alludes to that. It doesn’t mention same-sex marriage at all.

RNC member Gail Ruzicka was infuriated, stating the vote happened without any debate or discussion. She said, “They rolled us.” Ruzicka was upset about the absence of specific pro-life language. However, Chairman of the RNC Michael Whatley said there was “plenty of votes” and “discussion,” noting the platform had “overwhelming” support.
