Former Senator Gets Prison Time Over Money Scheme

Ex-Senator Heads To PRISON – Guess Who!

( – Political donations can often give rise to minefields of controversy. Many people question whether the law is robust enough to protect the American people from the negative effects of corruption or whether enough investigation takes place to identify breaches of the law. One former Republican state senator from Indiana has just received a prison sentence for illegally funneling casino money into his campaign coffers.

Brent Waltz ran for the US House of Representatives as a Republican in 2016. During his campaign, he illegally accepted around $40,000 in funding that passed through the accounts of New Centaur, a casino company in the state.

On Wednesday, August 17, Waltz was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison for his role in the fraud, and was also directed to pay a fine of $40,500. The other three charges against him were dropped as part of his plea bargain.

John Keeler, the New Centaur attorney who assisted the former state lawmaker in the illegal scheme, was sentenced to two months behind bars and issued a fine of $55,000. US District Judge James R. Sweeney II gave Keeler a lighter sentence than that requested by prosecutors citing multiple factors, including his age, according to a report from The Epoch Times.
