Former Candidate Arrested After Investigators Find Explicit Material

( – An attorney who was visible on Maine’s political scene has recently been arrested in connection with alleged offenses of the most heinous sort.

Eliot Cutler, a lawyer who worked for the administration of former President Jimmy Carter and subsequently ran for governor in Maine in 2010 and 2014, was arrested on four counts of possessing images of child exploitation on Friday, March 25. According to reports, investigators discovered 10 files showing the illicit activity on Cutler’s computer. Reports also noted that officers may find more illegal content on the candidate’s devices as they continue their search.

Law enforcement arrested Cutler two days after executing search warrants on two residential properties he owns in the state of Maine. The judge in the case set Cutler’s bail at $50,000, which was double the amount prosecutors asked for. The former political candidate was released on bail on Saturday, having spent Friday night in Hancock County Jail.

Cutler resigned from the presidency of the board of the Lerner Foundation following his arrest. Lerner is a group that helps young people from rural areas attend college. Executive Director Don Carpenter expressed his horror at the charges against Cutler, and stressed the alleged offender did not have contact with students through his role with the organization.
