Donald Trump to Face ‘Mini Trials’ Before Election

(RepublicanReport.org) – In August 2023, a federal grand jury indicted former President Donald Trump on four felony counts related to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. However, the defendant has not seen the inside of a courtroom on those offenses, as he has made every effort to delay the proceedings. However, after the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity, the American public might see the evidence against him sooner rather than later.

On July 9, sources suggested that Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is presiding over Trump’s case, will probably schedule “mini trials” to help her figure out which of the defendant’s actions fall under presidential acts and which ones do not. Anonymous sources said the defendant’s lawyers would probably try to delay these trials as well because of the upcoming election, but scheduling is up to Chutkan — if she decides to go forward, they will. MSNBC legal analyst Kristy Greenberg agreed with the mini trial assessment. She said on social media that the public should “expect briefing this summer and mini-trials this fall before the election.” Greenberg said that while the defendant doesn’t want voters to hear the prosecution’s evidence against him “before the election,” they will.

Neither Chutkan nor Special Prosecutor Jack Smith has weighed in on the possibility, but several reports indicate that the SCOTUS ruling gave the lower court no choice but to hold hearings to determine which parts of the case, if any, can move forward.

Six of the justices on the High Court ruled that a sitting president is immune from all criminal acts performed that are within their official duties. That includes when they leave the office as well. However, the ruling does not cover unofficial acts that are not laid out in the Constitution or those done for personal gain. Plus, any criminal acts performed by a president either before or after their time in the White House are open for prosecution.
