Brittney Griner Convicted, Sentenced to 9 Years Behind Bars

9-Year Prison Sentence ANNOUNCED – It’s Official

(RepublicanReport.org) – Global media outlets have been laser-focused on the story of WNBA star Brittney Griner over the last number of weeks. After her initial arrest in Russia in February for the possession of cannabis, there were various negotiations around repatriating the athlete to the United States. However, those have all failed so far. Following the conclusion of her criminal trial, Griner was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison and slapped with the equivalent of a $16,200 fine on Thursday, August 4.

The basketball player made a lengthy apology after hearing the verdict, mentioning her teammates, fans, family, and the WNBA. She owned the mistake of carrying vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her bag into the foreign country.

Experts predicted both the verdict and long sentence in this case. Griner was told to expect anything up to 10 years behind bars ahead of the hearing. Diplomatic efforts by US officials to secure the athlete’s release back home continue. Some have suggested a prisoner swap or an executive pardon from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Reactions poured in after the reveal of Griner’s sentence. President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi both maintained in their statements that the athlete is being wrongfully detained and have asked Russia to release her. Meanwhile, multiple members of her team have spoken out as well, with one individual, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, stating that she believes Griner is being used as a “political pawn.”

Do you think American authorities should continue their efforts to get Brittney Griner home?
