Border Arrests Soar After Border Patrol Agents Crack Down on Illegal Immigration & Drug Offenses

( – America’s southern border states have had serious issues with illegal immigration for many years now. It appears, however, that the situation has recently escalated to previously unseen levels.

Increase in US-Mexico Border Arrests

On Friday, November 20, the Washington Post released a report on arrests made on the southwestern border during the month of October. Investigators found the number had increased dramatically compared to previous months.

The report outlines that this spike is closely related to the policy of immediate expulsion the Trump administration has pursued recently. In a move to limit the spread of coronavirus, they have recently begun ejecting illegal immigrants from the country on arrest. This has led to a massive upswing in re-arrests, with records showing around 33% of those detained by border police in recent months were repeat offenders.

Drug Offenses

The amount of drugs coming into the US from Mexico increased in October as well. Deputy Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Robert Perez gave a statement on this matter. He is quoted as saying seizures of cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, and methamphetamine all went up compared to October 2019.

Fentanyl, in particular, appears to be a growing problem, with seizures of the dangerous opioid having increased fourfold since last year.

Perez also stated that travel restrictions had not deterred drug smugglers from carrying out their work. They’ve simply had to adopt new strategies to get their illicit products into America.

We can only speculate on the reasons for the increased criminal activity on our southern border. The increase in drug supply may be a symptom of the disengagement many people are facing due to lockdown measures. Whatever the driving forces are, however, it’s good to see our federal agents are up to the task of keeping our borders secure.
